‘Songs from the Mere’ is a collection of songs I wanted to record that would not have a place on the next Wolcensmen album. At the time of writing this it has been two and a half years since I recorded ‘Songs from the Fyrgen’ and so I was keen to present some new material.
‘Mere’ is an old word meaning ‘lake’, and the music mostly has a ‘watery’
or ‘murky’ theme. Up to now, the songs have come from the fyrgen—the
wooded hilltop; now descending to the mere for a change in mood. The crossing of water—whether river, stream, lake or sea—has a profoundly spiritual symbolism and so ‘The Ferryman’ takes us across.
